Safety
Parking Lot
The north parking lot (in front of the main entrance) is reserved for SSN, preschool and kindergarten families. Please park on the playground side of the parking lot for grades 1st-5th.
Children develop safety habits by practicing them and following proper examples as set by adults. Please encourage your children to: cross streets only at corners; look in all directions before crossing; enter cars only from the curbside; and, never, ever go between parked cars or buses. The crosswalk on Oak Street (about the middle of the parking lot), is the only place for crossing near the school. An adult volunteer supervises this crosswalk. Parents may deliver and pick-up their children in the Hug-n-Go Zone in the parking lot. Parents who park and escort students from the parking lot are to use the crosswalk in the middle of the parking lot.
Children may not cross the parking lot at any time unless accompanied by an adult! This is critical to student safety and is a “non-negotiable” for our students.
Students may only get in private vehicles at the Hug-n-Go lane in the parking lot in front of the school. We recommend that parents prearrange a location near the school for arrivals and departures. The bus lane should never be blocked or used for temporary parking.
The privilege of riding a bicycle to school is recommended for grades 3rd–5th and should be dependent upon the child’s adherence to safety practices. Adequate instruction to students concerning signaling, riding on the right side of the street, wearing a helmet and other rules for bike riders is the responsibility of parents. Parents may decide that a younger child is ready to ride a bike to school depending upon the child’s biking skill, safety and knowledge. We encourage your child to license his or her bicycle. This serves a dual purpose: it helps identify the child in case of an accident, and it helps to identify the bicycle in case it is lost or stolen.
Bikes, scooters and skateboards should be walked on the school grounds.
Roller blades may be worn and used as a means of transportation. However, students must remove and secure them in their backpack before entering school grounds. Children may not use skateboards, scooters, roller blades/skates or “skate-shoes” on school grounds during school hours. These are not permitted on the bus.
Dogs and Other Animals
Animals love the companionship of children and we frequently have animals near school grounds. However, sometimes even the gentlest of animals can become excited with so many children nearby. Such a situation is potentially dangerous. Additionally, many children and adults suffer severe allergic reactions when certain animal dander is present in the school. You can help us keep our students and staff safe by committing to keep your animals off school grounds, including during arrival and dismissal. You can also help us by reminding other adults that animals should not be on school grounds.
Fire Drills
Fire drills are held each month. We hold two emergency drills each year. One drill is our lockout/lockdown drill. The other is an emergency building evacuation drill or safe shelter drill. These drills provide us with the practice to continue operations within the safest environment should the need arise.

Emergency Communication
The fastest way to get information in an emergency situation is to follow Jeffco on X and Facebook (@JeffcoSchoolsCO) and check Jeffco’s homepage on the website for alerts.
The SchoolMessenger system uses what families enter into the Infinite Campus Online Registration system for contact information. Families must ensure this information is always updated.
Your Role: What Families Should Do in an Emergency
- Stay away. Do not go to the school. This may interfere with procedures. Only public safety personnel will be allowed in or near a school during an emergency situation.
- Do not call. Do not call the school or security staff. We understand you may want to communicate with your student during an emergency, but calling may prevent them from hearing important instructions.
- Be informed. Monitor your phone, email, district social media channels, local law enforcement or fire social media channels and local news. Jeffco provides fast and accurate information to its community. In some situations, accurate information can take a long time to verify and share. Please be patient.
- Be ready. When you are asked to pick up your student, come quickly and bring your identification to the reunification location communicated to you. Jeffco will only release students to adults listed on that student’s Infinite Campus page. Make sure anyone who could pick up your student in an emergency is listed. This can include neighbors, friends or other family members.
